Assuming your are talking about connecting the laptop for diagnostic purposes, OBD (and not power) have a look on e-bay, searching for DiagBox or Lexia. You'll see the kit pictured there. There is a thickish cable that connects from the OBD socket under the dash thru another large connector to the electronic bit and then to a USB cable that goes to the laptop. You'll need the appropriate software installed as well. Here is but one example.

Do check the operating system of your Laptop. This kit requires :- Software requires at least Intel Celeron/Pentium III 400 MHz, 128 MB RAM, 50MB free HDD space and USB 1.1 port (USB 2.0 recommended) and Microsoft Windows 98 SR2/2000/XP with the latest service pack installed.

My DiagBox software runs on Win 7 (32 bit). I had been running my previous Lexia software on an XP instance hosted in the free VMWare player but that was pretty slow. Wish they'd make a Linux version

my laptop runs windows 7 and is pretty decent so i think it should be enough
will this software also sort out the faults diagnostic and reset the eml?

I don't think it will run on Windows 7, in fact I am quite sure it wont. Ask 3rensho what he has or uses.

Someone a while back did recommend another system that worked with Windows 7, but now I cannot remember who it was?

Lexia/Diagbox will run fine on Windows7, BUT ONLY the 32-bit version, not the 64-bit version.

I know this, as this is what I run it on..

That's good, I was just pointing out that the one the OP showed does say Microsoft Windows 98 SR2/2000/XP I believe you have to look for one that shows Windows 7

If it is a big green multi pin connector, that is your OBD port. Mine is a car version and is in the glove box.
