1.6 Hdi 92: least revs without labouring engine
#1
I'm still getting used to driving a diesel, and in particular the 1.6 HDi 92 engine in my Mk 2 Berlingo.

What surprises me is how highly the vehicle is geared. It seems to me that it really needs to be up to about 45 mph to get into 5th - or, to put it another way, the minimum number of revs for driving in 5th is about 1500. But then I don't really know much about driving a diesel.

Those of you who drive the 1.6 HDi 92 - what is the fewest revs you can drive at in 5th gear without labouring the engine?

(I don't know if the answer depends on whether one drives a Mk2 or Mk3 Berlingo.)

id say 1500 is the least you should go, and change up at 2500 - 3000

I can go into 5th at 30mph dont have to use much diesel then. Is this a bad thing then?

I believe you are right!

We had an astra 1.9cdti courtesy van (very fast and very comfortable may i say!) and it had 6 gears, and we found our fuel economy improved quite significantly compared to the berlingo (sitting in 6th at 70mph)

When we asked the dealer why the berl didnt have the same 6 gears (even as an option), he said it was because the van was geared higher anyway.

On the level 1200 RPM is OK.It will drive without labouring 40 MPH on gentle inclines,& 50 mph up a wall. For hard acceleration I drop to 4th(not very often).'57 1.6 HDI 92.

I rarely go over 2500 through the box or sat in 5th.
The lag at about 1900 (30mph in 3rd) is a pita.

Is that a 2.0 HDI thing? My 1.6 HDI has no lag problems at all under any throttle conditions.
