[Steering & Suspension] Front wheel bearing

Hello All

I'm about to change front wheel bearing on my 2.0hdi. In the haynes manual it says there is a transponder or something for the ABS on the inner face of the bearing and that this should be fitted on the inside edge of the swivel hub.

My question is. How do I tell which is the inside on my wheel bearing. The only difference I can see is that on one side there is numbers and the other there aren't. Apart from this the bearing looks symmetrical and looks like it would fit both ways round.

Question is wether your car has ABS or not, does the hub have a sensor with wire fitted ?
Not all have it fitted possibly, this then raises the question if you have the wrong bearing, as it is possible to buy a bearing without the abs ring fitted. The ring is integral with the dust seal on the bearing, but can usually be recognised by a difference in colour, they. Are not usually symmetrical in my experience.

Thanks Lighty for the reply. I definitely have ABS. Can't really distinguish any difference in colour. Looks like I'll have to wait till tomorrow and ask at the garage. Why can't bearing manufacturers just make it obvious so there's no confusion (If only).

I haven't got Abs on mine but looking at the parts list, It looks like the abs sensor picks up pulses from the castleations on the drive shaft CV housings not the bearings. Have a look at what the sensor points to. :thumbsup:

You will probably find the exciter ring is fitted to the cv joint and a sensor in the bearing will not be required.
