Clutch Problem

Hello All
The clutch has started slipping on my 04 HDi, it is driveable with care at the moment but only going to get worse. I have a bill for a new one fitted at 54000, it is now 123000, is this normal? I know its a bit of a tractor and has a very torquey engine but it has never done any towing and I've always driven it very lightly to compensate for the torque, obviously can't vouch for previous owners. Do they just fry clutches?

So, questions - is there any way of prolonging the life of the current clutch? if not what make is best (this one is a Luk)? any suggestions on where to locate one at the best price? can I do it myself with limited facilities, removing gearbox etc, or am I going to have to stump up 6.5 hrs labour + vat?

Any help very gratefully received. Thanks for reading.

LUK is one of the better brands; either that or Valeo would be a safe bet. Possibly the best way to assess your DIY prospects is to make sure you have the means to crack the driveshaft nuts, and also eyeball all the bellhousing bolts for access. If you unbolt the steering rack and shift lever from the subframe, the whole lot can be pulled away for excellent workspace underneath.

Many thanks addo I think this one is best left to a garage! Do you, or anyone else, have any idea whether this model has a dual mass flywheel or not, I've been quoted prices about £200 apart depending on this.

Without seeing the VIN I can't be sure; sometimes you can chance it with websites that ask for your reg, like ECP.

Valeo, who are OEM for many clutches in Peugeot and Citroën, also offer non-DMF retrofit kits for many applications. I can't fairly comment on the relative "risks" of a single mass clutch to your driveline; someone like Lighty might have a local voice on the matter. Note that you might well encounter a few extra small costs in the clutch job, like pivot shaft bushes, and maybe even the pivot shaft itself.
