Droning noise
#1
Lightbulb
Can anyone help, my berlingo recently started making a noise when I slow down. After driving a distance and while slowing down, as I reach about 20mph I get a droning noise, even taking it out of gear turning of engine and letting it freewheel the noise is still there until I stop. And as I take of again it has gone, it doesn't do it all the time and sounds like if you get your mud flap rubbing on your wheel and vibrates through the gear lever. Any advice would be appreciated.

This is a long shot but i had a droning/ woowing noise and it drove me mad trying to find out what it was but turned out that when i changed my Air Filter, i had not seated the filter properly which caused the noise, noise was when fitted a Halfords filter, changed to Bosch, made sure seated, no noise.

as i said long shot

Thanks, but I haven't been near the filter so I don't think it could be that.

Wheel bearings or the r/h drive shaft support bearing Confusedcratch:

Is the under engine tray loose or flapping when you build up speed?.

Had that on a Passat lately and when it first happened it scared the daylights out of me. It was loose and started flapping
and droning as if all the wheel bearings went at once.

Have you looked at your wheel arches?

Are the retaining clips still in place? These...

I need to replace mine as I've lost some. When I drive through standing water it pushes the liner onto the wheel and I have to pull over and put it back in place. Could be similiar albeit not quite so extreme as that?

Thanks for your answers.
The day before the noise started I went through a rather large puddle of water right across the road. Took it to garage today and they think it could be driver wheel bearing as it appears to be starting to go. Other garage thought it could be a bearing in gearbox starting to go. How many new parts and at what cost are you expected to go to before it's repaired. If only after they replace something and the noise is still there you didn't have to pay. What would another garage say was wrong with it and what should I do?:brickwall:

What to do ..... makes sure the wheel nuts are fully tight and then run the van for a while to see how it all develops, if a wheel bearing is " going " then lift the corner once a week to check it's condition.

Last time I drove through a very deep puddle it dislodged the N/S front inner wing liner
and that was rubbing against the tyre making a drone/whine type noise.
The Older I get the Better I Was!  Cool
