Fan belt noise

Hi all,

I have a 2005 1.9D Berlingo van. For the last few weeks, there is a squealing noise from the engine, it happens when you are speeding up in 2nd or 3rd gear, maybe after taking a corner or bend, but only when the clutch is about halfway out, noise stops when clutch is fully out and you are driving as normal. The same noise also often occurs when you switch the engine off, the last thing you hear is a squeal. Any ideas anyone?

It sounds like the centre bearing in the flywheel that supports the gearbox input shaft.The noise is only heard when crank & input shaft are turning at different speeds ie when changing gear or,God forbid,you are riding the clutch.alut:

Cheers Ron, as a matter of interest, if this is the problem, is it something I should get looked at urgently, or can it wait?

If the bearing collapses, it doesn't make the gearbox work well - bits often get stuck where there's no clearance and secondary damage follows.
