No, it ain't illegal; I would imagine it would count against you if you were involved in an accident as the Highway Code advises against it. But it certainly is not illegal. Note the use of the term in the highway code (often in red print) Must Not. These are the illegal bits.

Interestingly modern automatic gearboxes on trucks are now adapting the tactic of going into neutral on the overrun to save fuel. They will seamlessly go in and out of drive.

It was illegal to coast in neutral as you were deemed to not be in full control of the vehicle due to no engine braking and not being able to accelerate, I don't know if or when it has been changed.

Waaaay back in the late 50s when Saabs were starting to win rallies and still had the lovely
two stroke triple motor, there was a lever under the dash thet could be pulled and that effectively
allowed the car to free-wheel when it wasn't accelerating. As they had a two stroke engine
there was very limited engine braking anyway. IIRC Wartburg had the same arrangement.

I had a Wartburg many years ago and apart from the cost of petrol and 2T the one thing that stood out in my mind was the setting of three individual sets of contact breaker points, actually in a strange sort of way I really liked the Wartburg.
Wartburg had a freewheel pre 1966 but afterwards with the " Knight " model memory seems to tell me things changed ???
