What does it smell like? Does it smell like exhaust fumes?

Check your coolant level, if heater matrix is leaking then your coolant level will gradually drop.
Otherwise it could be fumes from a leak somewhere in the exhaust system or possibly fumes leaking from a leaky injector seal (assuming you have a diesel model). I would have thought you'd be able to smell if it was exhaust fumes though.

Glad it's done. I often see ones where just the O-rings between the plastic parts have turned brittle and cracked with age and heat. Means they steam for a long time before they start dribbling visibly. If you were tight you could probably replace them and add a smear of Silastic.
