crazy mpg

If you saw the sludge in the inlet manifold caused by the exhaust gases mixing with the oil mist from the breather you would think that it is worth doing. The sludge can reduce the internal diameter by as much as 50% restricting air flow

Most certainly yes, my vehicle runs all round better for it.

The easiest way is to blank the two pipes.

Keep in mind what Romahomepete says about the build up of deposits in the inlet tract if you do this job and spend the extra time removing it all and giving it a good clean out, and hour will easily see it done and if you are slow and drink plenty of tea then two hours maximum.

so you just take the 2 rubber pipes off the egr valve and put a bung in the ends of the 2 pipes is that correct ????????

................... Yes ........................... to disable the EGR that is all you do ........................

but cleaning out the inlet tract is well worth doing and is essentially a screwdriver and Allen Key job.

Worth doing the manifold ?

What was the inlet tract like when you had the valve off ? This part is just a couple of allen bolts to remove, the manifold itself is a little more fiddly and is probably best left unless it is filthy - less chance of stripped threads and avoids the the need for you to purchase a gasket, why make work for the sake of it.

drove it back home hmmm nice van a bit slow but 37mpg 100 mile run
gave it to my mechanic new belts new plugs new filters oil brakes cos I was planing to keep it a while
anyway after service temp 0 to + 5 100 mile run 38 mpg not impressed

off to halfords for some millers fuel addertive next 100 mile 0 to + 5 35mpg

right need time to calm down thinking give it a wash and put it on flea bay
anyway my son took my car this morning as I had bought a new push bike
and needed to do a 200 mile trip so I had to use the slugingo

and guess what never went above 60 2500revs 46.4 to the gallon

YOU TELL ME is it doing it to wind me up

Sounds very normal to me 38 in the cold months, 44 in the summer months would be par for the course for the 1.9 non turbo. I was able to get mine above 50mpg in the summer by driving slowly an adopting an eco driving style - however could go as low as 32 in very cold weather driving it in the style white vans are meant to be driven in.

Your mpg figures are probably worse than you think, calibrate your mileometer against something like http://www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php (which is very accurate) You will probably find your mileometer reads about 5% high, so your 38mpg in reality will just be 36.1mpg.

and the 57mpg shown for my 1.6hdi is driving in a very slow eco style manner.
