[Engine] LOOSING ALL POWER FOR ABOUT 5 SECS!!
#1
DEAR FORUM
MY 2004 2.0HDI HAS 161,000 MILES ON THE CLOCK.
RECENTLY WHEN I HAVE BEEN DRIVING, SUDDENLY THE ACCELLERTOR HAS LOST ALL POWER. LUCKILY THE ENGINE HAS NOT CUT OUT, BUT EVEN IF I PUMP THE ACCELLERATOR, THERE IS NO NOISE OR POWER.

IT HAS HAPPENED ON THE MOTORWAY IN THE FAST LANE WHICH WASNT NICE!

TODAY I WONDERED IF IT DID IT MAINLY WHEN I SUDDENLY HAD TO GO FROM 70 TO 50 MILES PER HOUR.

I AM A LADY DRIVER AND DONT KNOW MUCH ABOUT CARS.

DO YOU THINK THIS COULD BE A BUILD UP OF FUMES IN THE ENGINE, OR DO YOU THINK ITS LACK OF FUEL DELIVERY.
IT DOES "HESITATE" AND SORT OF JERK ALONG IF I DROP BELOW 45 IN OVERDRIVE.

IM THINKING OF HAVING THE CARBERETTORS CLEANED.
WHAT DO OTHER FORUM USERS THINK PLEASE!!

I think that I would be interested to know where your "carberettors" are....................

So many lines, not enough time... So I'll be nice instead. Smile

OK, to start with I suggest finding a workshop who have suitable electronic kit to scan the car, as it will have stored information about the failure. The factory equipment is either called Lexia or Diagbox. It's important to use the correct diagnostic gear as nothing else will give the same "depth" of information about what's been happening.

What's actually wrong could be anything from leaky injectors, to air in the fuel, to fuel supply problems, to EGR or turbo faults. There's simply too much guessing without both skill and the right machinery.

Can you tell us where you are located, there may be a member of this forum close by with a diagnostic tool. When did it last get a service? When you switch on the ignition, there is normally a service interval indication on the dash where the mileage is normally shown. It also shows the oil level momentarily (but is usually lying so I generally ignore it!).

Glad to know there are lady Bingo owners joining. Even if you don't intend to fix it yourself, it's nice to know a bit about the cause and potential cost before going to a garage.

Oh, and can you turn your caps lock of please?

I live in West Midlands and was thinking about using French Diagnostics in Telford. It was last serviced Feb 13, so is due MOT and service. However I might have the diagnostics done 1st, because if it's big money I might have to trade it in. It's a great shame because it has been a fantastic car. Some of the warning lights flash alot, the RAC said there was a problem on the chip about 4 years ago, so Ive just kept driving which is what they said to do!
I suppose it has got a bit sluggish generally of late, so Im wondering now if it could be the turbo. It all sounds expensive!

If you have a sudden and total loss of power then I would suspect an electrical fault. It is quite possible that it is a crank shaft position sensor or a cam position sensor, the only reliable way to find out is to have the vehicle plugged into diagnostic equipment and any fault codes read.
The turbo can cause problems if it is on its last legs but won't turn the power on and off like a light switch.
