OIL COOLER FAILED AGAIN!!!
#1
Hi all changed the oil cooler previously in my Berlingo... has failed again throwing up lots of lovely oil into my header tank and beyond!

Has anyone been running with a bypassed oil cooler for any amount of time?
In summary am too tight to change it again on my old Lingo and would like the humble opinions of forum members on the effects of bypass...

Cheers all Confusedalut:

Why do you want to wreck your engine?
(running it without cooling is a sure way of breaking something expensive... )

I would ask; How and why did the cooler fail?
Can the system be partially blocked somewhere after the cooler so that pressure builds up?

Haven't taken the cooler off yet to look. The last one had a hairline crack which drove oil into the cooling system. The priority is getting all the oil out of the coolant first I think. As for wrecking the engine, I want to bypass for a short while to clear the coolant and check for leaks in the head gasket. My van is on 220000 miles now so has done ok with me alone maintaining it for 9 years now...

Which engine is it? My 1.6HDi had just had a new cooler fitted when I bought it 12 months ago. Its never caused me any problems and I've done 95,000 miles in that time.

Gadgetman has a good point, the cooler is there for a reason and unless your vehicle hasn't got much life left in it I think you really need to find out why you've had two fail in quick succession.

1.9d....Fitted used cooler from 2005 van in 2007. Have done 100000 on that cooler, first one failed after 4 years.. will trace the fault. But have seen at least 10 similar PSA vehicles with this recurring fault so is not unusual and a flawed design in my humble opinion.

Is there no better option from the market? Can you fit a different cooler with a better build quality.Just a thought.Confusedalut: PS is it mounted securely?

I don't know yet Ron, don't know if it has actually failed yet. Could be a slow headgasket leak. Only assume the cooler has failed again as it did before. Both were original valeo parts.. wanted to bypass the cooler for a short while while flushing the cooling system over a few days.... Am not too willing to spend on the old lingo...will keep ya posted... Cheers

If it is the head gasket, don't skimp on head skim.I have seen loads of jobs where people say they checked it themselves & the gasket blows again.Confusedalut:

Don't you think the Nemo is expensive compared to the Berlingo?
I'm not trying to put you off.:thumbsup:Confusedalut:
