Symbols of dash screen

When you press the end of with windcreen wiper stalk the dash screen steps through a series of screens:
Default is date and time
Press once and car and petrol pump comes up with a Miles until number, all good - how many miles until you run out of petrol
Press again - XXX MPG and petrol pump sign comes up, I've never got this to work and actually had it showing 999 MPG - does it only work properly if you are on a long drive, motorway, doing 70, as all other times it jumps around
Press again - lolipop and car with number of miles shown, no idea what this is for a the same number has appeared there every since I bought the car - 6214 miles??? Any idea?
Press again - lolipop, car and petrol pump with MPG, again this is stuck on 41.5MPG and has not moved
Press again - car only - again this is stuck on 19MPH.

So the only one of any use is how many miles until I run out of petrol, anyone know what the others are meant to tell me?

1. Correct

2. This only starts to work when you reach 20mph, it then displays the current mpg that you are doing - put the foot down going up a hill and it will drop down to a low mpg, but lift your foot off and let it coast down a hill and it will show 999mpg - all other mpg numbers in between will depend on how much you are pressing on the pedal and whether it is uphill or downhill

3. This is the total number of miles since the trip computer was last reset - while on this one, if you press the button and hold it in, it should reset to 0 (yours hasn't been reset for 6214 miles)

4. This the average mpg since the last time the trip computer was last reset - if you press the button and hold it in, it should reset to 0 as in point 3 (your 41.5mpg is the average over the 6214 miles in point 3)

5. This is the average speed since the trip computer was last reset (your 19mph is your average speed over the 6214 miles in point 3)

Note: If you do press the button to reset the trip computer it will zero No.3, 4 and 5, you cannot reset only one

they seem to stop at 6214 if you don't reset them, my mk3 does it

There was a thread on here a while back, people seem to think it stops at 6214 because that's the same as 10000 kilometres

Hi, Thanks for the replies, I do reset my trip mileage every time I fill up with diesel, holding the knob for 3 seconds, the one near where the mileage is displayed on the speedometer.

How do you rest the trip computer? When do people normally reset their trip computer?

If you press and hold the button on the stalk when at Points 3, 4 or 5 it will reset it to 0

When you do this is entirely up to you

Ways to use it could be
1. To see what is your average mpg on a daily trip to work - reset it to 0 and then see what the average mpg is after you have reached work
2. If you are going on a long run somewhere - reset it to 0 and then see what the average mpg is after you have reached your destination

For no. 1, if your trip to work included a lot of stop starts in traffic, the average mpg will most probably be in the low 40's
For no. 2, if you take your time and don't put the foot down too much, the average could be in the high 40's, or if you watch the continuous mpg figure mentioned in point 2 of my previous post and keep it as high as possible by feathering the throttle, keeping it under 55mph and short changing, you could reach mpg figures in the 50's

The trip computer is completely separate feature from the mileage counter on the dash
