Oily smell and black smoke

hi all, im new to the forum and it looks a very helpful site.

i have just bought a 2007 berlingo 1.6hdi with 105k on the clock, and recently it has started smelling oily. i opened the bonnet and found some oil on the engine, but put this down to the previous owner having over filled the van with oil, what i want to know is could the excess oil in the van be causing the black smoke? its only a small ammount but im slightly concerned. thanks for any help

Hello Ben welcome to the forum :wave: first thing as it been serviced regularly if not then the air filter mite need changing that will give you black smoke the oily smell if you have air/con the pollen filter's mite need changing or the oil on the engine getting hot the other thing check the oil in the engine with the dipstick when cold if its 'over filled you must take some out as this won't do the engine and or seal's any good .
