My son's mk 1 has a lot of oil in the water header tank, a lot! He's assumed the oil cooler is bust and has bought the replacement. Does anyone know whether the water coolant side will need to be cleaned, and if so how?

Are you sure it's not a head gasket failing?
Either way, the oil will rot your durite, radiator flushes will remove much of the oil. I recommend removing all rubber hoses and scrubbing them inside much as possible after a couple of flushes.

You can flush all the oil out with a washing powder and water solution, or forte bio degreaser or dae eco radiator flush. It will take a few weeks to get all the oil out though, flush weekly.. is a mission!

Chuck a dishwasher tablet in the header, plain water with no antifreeze, run for 20 miles then drain down and flush
refill with antifreeze/ coolant
