Alternator problem

Hi all had a funny rattle from alternator area for bout three weeks but then yesterday it made a crunch noise lights went dim but then picked up again and noise has gone but belt seems to be squeeling abit had belt of today could find any think (crank pulley ok) i was just wondering if any body has had similar problem and if the alternator pulley should be a clutched pulley ?? Did the alternator spin freely?I was thinking perhaps the bearings are dry(more common on older cars) & running hot.alut:

Yer i checked all other pulleys too :/ all smooth and no play
