buying a berlingo
|
Hi everyone
Is aircon worth holding out for as i am finding it hard to find on most Berlingos , have been looking for a desire 2lt hdi model .
I even put a deposite on one but the dealer could not fix the airbag light or find the spare key :evil:
May end up going for 1.6 desire model up to 2005 ish

Hi Dimplex, I have got air con and use it all the time, and wouldn't buy one without it. Great in the summer as the Berlingo gets very hot with the amount of glass, and stops windows misting up in winter. Less reduction in MPG than opening a window.

If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.

I've got aircon as well and use it frequently when the temps are in the upper 20's to 30's. So far doesn't seem to have much of an effect on mileage. My wife, who always used to complain about aircon in buildings she worked in, loves it in the Berli.

Hi MATEY, I`m a bugger for watching my mpg and using the air con hardly makes a difference, I do wonder why as previous cars I have had with it do suffer? Is it really air con? I think not , well not as one would get in an expensive car, there is no real temperature control, in a Rolls you can turn it to desired temperature. BUT it does cool car down nicely when its hot, REMEMBER those odd hot days we get, was it last year or year before?
buy one with, be patient, it will be worth it.

Aircon comes with a cost. My current Berlingo has it & I like it, but I suppose I shall have to get it serviced at yr 3 next service at £80 cost. My dealer 'recommended' it was done at yr 2 service but I'm hoping I can get away with every 3yrs. If pump fails it costs several £100s to repair which is why many older cars have non working a/c.
This is the first car I have had with a/c & you certainly appreciate it when its really hot like in southern France but truth is how often do we get the sort of weather where a/c is essential? If you buy a car several yrs old with a/c first make sure it works, the air blast should feel really cold with your hand over vent. If it don't & the seller says "it only needs a recharge" it will be because the gas has leaked out which suggests it will need repairs as well.
When the airbag light stayed on on my previous 2005 'lingo it was just the on/off switch in door frame that needed replacing.
2 types of aircon. The simple 'on or off' as in the Berlingo or 'climate control' as fitted in higher spec cars & available as option on XTR. With climate control the aircon runs all the time & works in conjunction with heater allowing constant temp to be maintained. Microprosessor controlled so more to go wrong.
The 'aircon increases fuel consumption' is only relavent in driving in heavy traffic because on't open road in hot weather you would otherwise drive with window open & increase drag so no different to aircon.

Probably worth if for most people, though it does depend on how much you personally like / dislike heat. As Chris says, there's a lot of glass in a Berlingo, especially if you have a modutop.
I don't have it, but I'm in the North of Scotland, and so only miss it about 5 days every year. (And last year, we had such a poor summer that I didn't miss it at all! ) But if I lived south of the Tweed, I'd want aircon.

I can honestly say that using aircon on my 1.6 HDI makes no noticeable difference to MPG.Having just returned after a 2000+ mile trip around Germany using a/c frequently,my MPG stayed the same as normal
