Hello, excited new berlingo owner!
#1
Hi everyone.
Thought i would say hello. On friday i bought my new car a battered old blue berlingo multispace 1.8 3 door. Was terrified had never bought a car blind on ebay before, must avoid that site after one two many glasses of wine Smile.Me and the kids are loving the full length sunroof. The van is already earning its keep transporting water for aquarium water changes its got 500l to shift tomorrow!

Only a slight blot on the copybook, the old thing has a lumpy idle. Have replaced the MAP sensor and idle control valve which has helped but not eliminated it. Not sure what to try next.

Mark, I'd seriously suggest you look at the battery cables if it's an older model (X reg?). The solid lead terminals often lose quality inside where you can't see them going bad. Failing that, check your plugs (and inspect each one for crystals). The motors are getting to an age where head gasket failure is almost expected.

It's an s registration. Didn't think of the battery cables! There isn't any sign of a head gasket issue yet oil and water all in the right places and clean. No odd behaviour with engine temp.

Bit worried the car has no history (it was very cheap) so I would like the timing belt changed. Would it be worth doing head gasket at same time to prevent issues or would you reccomend waiting till I see symptoms of it acting up? How tricky is it to do this on a 1.8 petrol?

I'd leave it be, but definitely do the timing belt if no history. Beware the slippery balancers - buy a new one and fit it before doing the belt in order to time up the motor right.

Hi & welcome,Mark. As Addo says, change the cambelt.:wave:Confusedalut:The other things I would suggest is that you change all oils/fluids.

Would agree with you, would have though a blown HG would cause a lot of other damage though.

Had a closer look at my ht leads and on one of them the connector and cable had come apart. May well explain the rough idle, leads and plugs in the drivers seat waiting to go in.

Averagely, the new lead has made a huge difference. The ceramic part of the plug was looking very brown. Unfortunatly i was given the wrong plugs at the motor factors, so i couldnt do the job properly so left on the other old ht leads.
