Silicon Sealers.
#1
Hi all,

Being a painter & decorator I come in to contact with many silicon sealers that will resist water, oil, acids and heat.
One such sealer is Sikafex 291 which is used on marine boats for sealing decking, portals, trim & etc..

What I was wondering is would these sealers be a good substitute for Oil seals, O-rings and mating sealers if piped into grooves and crevices where the original seals would be. I ask this because when I changed the oil filter housing seal I noticed that the oil sump is sealed with a rubbery sealer which is white in colour and resembled a sikaflex sealer.

Beside the fact it's an oil resistant silicone, the problem is the range of temperature that the Sikaflex 291 can handle. Try "Sika SikaSil-GP High Temp Silicone Sealant Red" instead Wink

You can use waterproof bathroom sealant to seal your oil sump if you want.

That reminds me need to reseal mine its been leaking ever since I had to rescue part of the old dipstick which broke off and the sealant I got from halfrauds is clearly useless.

I will now be using bathroom sealant

A lot of domestic silicones for wet areas are acetic acid cure. They're not something I like to use on a motor.

For thin joints I am totally sold on Threebond 1211, the price is outrageous but it works very well.
