Electrical issues and van won’t start after rain
#1
Photo
Afternoon guys.

So yesterday morning I went to start the van it wouldn’t fire up, turns over fine but that’s it.

My indicators and wipers have also stopped working, and the dash lights are acting oddly. ( with the ignition on the lights all go out after a few seconds )

We have had heavy rain and noticed it was quite wet where the aerial is and also the passenger footwell.

I have had a read on here and decided to take out the bsi and check for water damage, I’ve attached a few pics but can’t see anything unusual and can’t see any water marks.

Can anyone give me ideas on where to check next for what’s causing the issues ? I’m pretty sure it’s water related due to the amount of rain we have had and how wet the van has gotten inside

Thanks very much

Matt

The BSI looks fine, like you say. Maybe damp in the fuse box inside the engine bay by the passenger side headlight?

Hi Cancunia, thanks for your reply. I have just checked in there this minute and absolutely bone dry.

OK, maybe a bad electrical earth inside the cab?
There are some posts on here about the horn not working due to a bad earth on the steering wheel column. Do you have an OBD reader? If not, maybe measure the resistance from the steering column to the battery negative.
Must confess that I'm guessing, but the dash lights going out after a few seconds suggests a bad earth or a bad connection somewhere.

I would be checking all of the solder joints on the BSI, especially the one's which the plugs go into, you could have a cracked joint which isn't making a contact.

Cheers guys. I have checked solder joints and can’t see anything obvious.
Put the bsi back in and reset still nothing

Battery voltage is good.

Earths are all good

Strange I will keep digging and see if I spot anything obvious

Thanks

I don’t have a OBD reader but I’ll happily go get one if it may show up some faults ?

Thanks

They can be had for less than £5. You may get an an error code to point out a problem.
Better would be Lexia / Diagbox but that's more like £50.

Thanks cancunia

I’m pretty certain it’s water related due to how wet the van was internally after the downpour over the weekend.

Strange how just the wipers and indicators seem to have stopped working and it won’t start. And that the obvious places to check are bone dry !

Never straight forward

Thanks

Another thing I have just noticed is the indicators will work, but only when I switch the sidelights or headlights on ??

When the stalk is in the off position the indicators won’t work

Thanks
