With your vehicle details in your signature you won't have to remember to put them in every post
If the engine was starting ok with no misfire / lots of grey smoke just a day or so ago it would indicate that the glow plugs were working ok at that point.
It would be extremely unlikely for all four glow plugs to fail at the same time so I would be looking at the glow plug relay.
When you turn the ignition on the glow plugs are powered for around 15 seconds, if you don't start the engine they turn off, so any testing of power to the glow plugs needs to be done within this period.
Connect a test lamp to the glow plug bus bar and to the negative of the battery and turn the ignition on to test if the glow plugs are getting a feed. (I know the mechanic has tested this but it's nice to be certain)
If the plugs aren't getting power you could connect a wire from the + terminal of the battery to the top of one of the plugs and keep it connected for about 20 sec then disconnect it and try to start the engine.
By the way the glow plug warning light on the dash may only light for a short time but take no notice of that as it doesn't represent the true workings of the glow plugs.
