Locking car with boot open?

Open the tailgate, then lock the car.
Obviously the tailgate will not lock as it is open...
Or am I missing the point?cratch:

The central locking on the new models won't lock if any of the doors, including the tailgate, are open.

I'm going to order one of those ventlocks, that should do the trick.

Won't lock with remote or key? Or both?
Seems strange....
Although have no experience of the Mk.3.
