There is a time factor as well as mileage to be taken into consideration. The Book says 10 years or 100,000 miles. Since our engine,s are built where the valves move into the cylinder a broken belt is a major No No. Many of the belts are not the problem. I have known of auxillary belts breaking and taking the cambelt with it. Another problem is the belt follower pulleys breaking up with wear and again taking the belt with them. Where I am the trade reckon a change of belt, followers and water pump is best done around the 7 years and 70,000 miles. It will cost about £350 to £400 to change the above parts. It is not cheap but a new engine price would more or less write off your Berly. In saying that I have seen customers getting off with a new head (second hand) plus the fitting charge. You pays your money and takes your pick. Hope this helps.

140000 miles or 10 years on all HDI engines between 1100cc and 2000cc except the 136bhp versions according to my service book.
My previous Vauxhall had a 100000 mile interval, and I changed the belt at 74000 and the belt was in a very poor state, couldnt see how it would have lasted another 26000!

I understand your point of view - I was very dubious too. However, I have just changed my timing belt at 87500 miles and the belt (original) was still in pretty good shape with no signs of cracking or exposed chords. That said, I am now very happy to have changed it as I really didn't feel comfortable pushing the belt to the limit. As it transpired it was the right move as the water pump was showing some leakage!!

Ok, the 2.0 hdi interval is 96000 miles or 100000 miles depending on Citroen or Peugeotmpoint of view. In my opinion and experience, they will reliably last this long, except on the C8 or Pug 807, due to water getting on the belt.
On the other hand, the 1.6 hdi will last 144000 miles or 150000 miles depending on Citroen or Peugeot, and I have from experience found his also to be true.
In fact having changed at least 50 of these belts, I have never seen one looking on its last legs.
The 1.6 belts do get noisy though, sometimes at 30 /40000 miles, and I always recommend change at this point. When I have changed these belts, they always appear "rusty", and this seems to be the cause of the noise.

I had a belt done last year on a 2.0 HDi (not my Puglingo). It was ten years old but only 56K miles. I know, I *really* should get out more. Sad

The belt looked like .... well, not new, but almost new. No cracking, fraying or obvious signs of wear, same with tensioners etc. My mechanic said it wasn't worth changing - but he started, so he finished.

Had my 2004 Berlingo 2.0HDi done recently at 85k along with the waterpump. The belt was fine but the waterpump was very stiff compared to the new one.

Why cant they produce a better quality belt for all engines so they last longer.
My 2001 Berlingo van 1.9 D its every 40,000 according to the Haynes manual

If belt fails before Cit specified change period & you can show full Cit dealer workshop service history then you would have cast iron case for free repair, I would have thought? This happened with BMW, certain engine was failing cam chain at about 80k miles. Those with Beemer fsh got a foc repair, those without did not. It was on BBC Watchdog.
