Thought I would report back. It was the switch that needed replacing. Thanks for the advice.

Sorry for all the questions, if it is the fuse that has blown,would anything else of stopped working, or is the fuse just for the brake lights

Thanks for the replies. I know the previous brake pads did at least 25,000 miles and I have been driving the van exactly the same. I will report back once I know what the problem is.
