Changing brake cylinder

Quick question; is it possible to change the rear brake cylinder without dismantling the brake shoes. i.e. slip the shoes off the cylinder, change it and then slip them back on?

It's possible, but I find it easier to take the shoes off. If they are contaminated with fluid, they will need replacing anyway

Why waste an opportunity to do some worthwhile maintenance while you have the access.

Because whenever I take brake shoes off the replacing of them entails a lot of swearing and the pinging of springs all over the garage. That is if I can actually work out or remember where they were from in the first place.

The shoes aren't contaminated. It is a very small and recent leak.

Tried that. Still got the picture. But it doesn't show what is at the back

Its all those self-adjusting bits and those little caps you have to compress over the springs while holding the pin in place at the back and PING!! Now where's it gone?

eurocarparts   has a tool (@£6.00 ) just for the washers on spring retainers. I used to have one until somebody thought they needed it more than me.  Ideal for doing them awkward blighters

It is easy to remove the slave cylinders without removing the brake shoes just adjust the shoes out replace cylinder then reset the adjusters on the shoes.

However if you find it difficult to replace brake shoes do you think you really want to tackle changing the wheel cylinders?

Brake cylinders don't have springs. And there is only one part to worry about

I just use my fingers to hold / push / turn the spring retainers, you lot need more Weetabix !!!!!!!!
