1.6 HDI Fubar - no start
#1
Just been recovered by the AA ??

Running along the motorway and the engine cut out. (B9 1.6 HDI Multispace)

No abnormal noises beforehand or warning lights.

Rolled to nearest slip road and attempted to restart the car and I got a single click but it didn’t fire up or turn over.

Battery light started flashing while coasting.

All other lights are functioning as they should, wipers functioning as they should but no turn over when attempting to start engine.

AA guy came out and took off the fan belt, told me to put car into second gear, take off hand brake and he started rocking the car back and forward.

He didn’t see anything turning ?

He thinks it could be down to the starter motor. How likely is this? What could be causing this issue? What checks could I perform?

There was also a faint eggy smell coming from the engine bay when this occurred.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how this can be remedied?

2012 B9 1.6 HDI Multispace.

No codes were read by the AA for some reason so I will plug Diagbox into it in the morning when I have daylight to work with. I’m thinking starter motor but I’m probably wrong knowing me. It’s currently on 230,571 miles and again when it’s daylight I’m going to confirm whether or not the cam belt has snapped (hopefully not).

When you try to start it it makes a single click but won’t even turn over. Battery voltage on rest is 12.18V. The AA guy took off the fan belt which is sitting on my back seat and if memory serves me well I think he turned the alternator and it moved freely with the belt off. At this point I’m uncertain if the cam belt has been damaged (hopefully not), but if it is how screwed am I? Is something like this fixable?

Cheers in advance.

Welcome to the forum
Your battery voltage looks a bit low, maybe the engine died as there was not enough electric power? Best to get the Diagbox info before guessing any more.

This is what’s happening when it’s being rocked in gear.

These are the codes that were read. These codes were up before so they aren’t entirely new and there is no new codes since the issue occurred.

Both codes relate to the fuel system.
Can you turn the engine via the crankshaft pulley? You may need to take the driver's side wheel off & the lower cambelt cover to get access.

My car wouldn't start once the following day when the battery voltage was 12.3v so I popped it on a charger for a few hours not had a problem since. Maybe they have a cut off for engine starting voltage. Mine happened after I was being a girl and started the car 4 times in a row trying to get the fan turn off after doing a very short journey to the tip ona super home day with a/c (I know now it turns off by its self ooopps) I don't know if your could be the same reason as it was running when it stopped. Mine was when I went out to it the next day to carry on as usual. Not sure if it helps but worth a try.

I mean a hot day not a home day

It's possible the fuel pressure regulator failed while running, or one of the main fuses has blown and stopped the fuel supply, could be the fuel pump fuse, or one related to the BSI or ECU and the engine simply cut out.

The code 1352 is just a glow plug error (no supply to glow plug relay) which would not cut the engine out while running but the other (0087) shows there is no rail pressure. That would do it.

Mind you, when it isn't running there is no rail pressure other than the locked-in pressure from the last run except when you run out of diesel, then you get a dry rail with no pressure.

The fuel pump could have stopped or the fuel rail pressure regulator failed but both or either can be due to a blown fuse or a dead pump among other things. If the cam belt had snapped, chances are the engine would lock up solid or once the valves were bent, it would spin on the key like an electric motor - all spin and no cranking sound.

Best to get a mechanic who is competent to look at it.
