Help required with nsf steering gaiter please.

It doesn't have to pass over the treads, because the WHOLE gater should be put on the stud in the beginning before stretching it over. I hope OP understands what I mean by that. Work smarter, not harder.

You can also buy a plastic cone intended for fitting gaiters over CV joints, the one I used to have was orange and the big end went on first, then the greased inside of the gaiter could be pushed over it onto the shaft more easily. It stops the gaiter hitting anything sharp, or anything at all, until it's where you want it to be.

Thank you for your reply, great suggestion Wink  Funnily enough I had seen something called a Raksox recently and was thinking along those lines but the cone seems a better bet.

Maybe you can make a cone / taper by winding some masking tape around the ram pin? It would protect the boot from the threads as suggested a couple of posts earlier but also help ease the boot over.

Yeah, thats a decent shout which I hadn`t thought about. I had however thought about using a split gaiter which would eliminate any dismantling, but I am struggling to find one that might do the job, the nearest I can find is the one in the attached photo although the size on each end is different and in that case wouldn`t work but you get the idea behind my thinking.

Split gaiters are absolutely rubbish, don't even bother. They fill up with dirt, never seal properly and are absolute crap. Get the proper gaiter and a cone. Slide it on, job done.

Sounds like you`ve had experience, in which case I`ll take your advice.

I need to order a dedicated gaiter for the near side so I thought why not a split gaiter. As you mention, proper gaiter with a cone and plently of grease Wink

Yeah I've tried those split ones and they honestly are useless mate. They're supposed to keep grease in and dirt out so they do neither very well with a gaping split up the side of them. It's maybe a complete pain to fit a proper gaiter but well worth it for the function of the parts it is protecting.

I wonder if the stud unscrews, either with a pair of nuts or a 'needle roller' type stud extractor (would need Loctite when put back in).

Thats what I will do. I just thought about a split gaiter as an option ( assuming I could have found one to fit ) because of the slightly confined working space. I have now ordered the correct gaiter and a cone. The new gaiter doesn`t come with clips though, how successful are cable ties as an option?
