[Engine] Limp Mode - Low Power
#1
I have a 2017 850 Enterprise Van.

After discovering a severe windscreen leak after new one fitted I had 2 to 3 inches of water sitting in the floor under the carpet.

One week later I dried it out with engine running for several hours in neutral, heater on max and dehumidifier in the cab running.

I've now noticed it's in limp mode / low power.

No engine management lights or fault codes appear.

Starts up as usual but without driving it, it will only rev lightly, max is just under 3000rpm.

Any thoughts on what could cause this? Would running it on the drive over 7 days for about 4 hours a day cause any issues to look at?

I've had a get your engine fixed light on for months yet there are no codes. When I took it to the garage they had the Citroen software to delve deeper and it was a low pressure something warning. Happened when I filled the tank. Since they cleared the code it's been fine for a year. Normal readers can't delve into the Citroen software, there are  layers that are not accessible to over the counter readers. Take it to a garage with Citroen software and they will be able to read it. Unless someone knows where you can get a reader that will work properly.

Diagbox. The original Citroen software is the one you need - or a professional scanner like Autel MaxiDiag or Snap-On can work. No cheap ones work.

There will be a code or codes to find, not all faults put the engine management light on. I posted a document showing which faults cause limp mode and to what RPM the limits are set, it's in the how-to section.

I took my Van to a local garage and has been connected to a Maxisys 908S scanner for a diagnostics.

The result of the diagnostics showed a BSI fault, and an engine ECU fault x 2 and an Airbag pretensioners ECU fault.
The mechanic cleared all the faults but said there was no link to the low boost/power issue. He suggested I check the air filter in case it was wet but it wasn't.

The ECU faults were U1218:81 & P0493:62
The BSI fault code was F5FF but he said that wasn't a known fault code like the ECU codes.

Other than going to Citroen and printing money for the repairs I'm not sure what direction to go with.

He said you might need to drive it about and hope it clears itself but if a management light on the dashboard lights up then keep it running and bring it back to him!
Any thoughts?

I would suggest this is all because of the large water leak, with water probably getting onto the BSI which controls everything on a Berlingo. Personally, if it were me I would get an independent assessment if the water damage to the system and be going down the legal route of passing the complete cost of any repairs necessary to the company that replaced your windscreen. Not sure if yours does but many car/van insurance policies now have a legal part that covers you for any legal costs?

Hope you manage to get it sorted.

Can't find F5FF, it's not listed. Probably an error of his scan equipment or a "bug" code, there are some like F40 which are software bugs in the ECU and BSI code and are meaningless.

So likelihood is as MS says, you have water in the BSI (very bad) and possibly a faulty cooling system control too (engine ECU). The second one will cause limp mode and it won't go away till the faults are fixed. Or it will come right back. Clearing codes doesn't fix faults unfortunately.

I also hope you get it fixed. Maybe it's a painful one but swapping a BSI is not trivial and needs a specialist in this area to code a new (used) on to work in your car. Most don't come back from this very easily.

Thanks all.

Yes, I have the windscreen company onboard and have already been reimbursed for the purchase of a dehumidifier that I bought to dry the cabin out and the cost of the diagnostics. I'm waiting for them to come back to see how to progress further!! - They are certainly onboard at the moment.

The BSI which as you've stated can be replaced but will need programming I'm kind of hoping is the answer, if nothing more it fixes it rather than loads of time looking at other causes.

Where is the BSI situated on a 2017 Berlingo Van. The water leak came in from the top right of the windscreen as you look at it from outside. Therefore the water came in down the pillar and into the van near where the bonnet latch is on the passenger side. The earthing connections were buried in 3 inches of water on both footwells. The Airbag box as seen in the picture would have come into contact with water too.

It's buried behind the glovebox under a mass of wires. Looks like a fusebox, has several levels linked together with micro-pin sockets. Lots of plugs on it.

Wow that's a lot of water to have inside.
