Fuel Consumption Query

Hi

Having read various posts here, I understand that new engines can take a while to 'run-in', before the fuel consupmtion figures reach their best. The first couple of tankfuls from brand new returned quite poor figures but fuel consumption has improved alot. I've just returned from a trip to Bristol which is a round trip of about 260 miles from here in Surrey. The route was mainly motorway (with no hold-ups!) and driving as gently as possible, cruising at 70 I managed to average 47 mpg. My Berlingo is a 1.6HDI XTR manual gearbox with now about 2300 miles on the clock.

Is this about the best that should be achievable or will the engine improve further still?

I'd say 47mpg @ 70mph is good!
I done a journey few years ago Glasgow to Sunningdale at night no traffic and only averaged 42mpg @ 70mph.

Yup, XTR Hdi 110 with 50,000 plus miles and my journey to work involves motorway at an average 60mph. I get just around 50mpg.

I have found a lovely Berlingo at a good price but PETROL !!! (16v)
& shocked to find that the same figure for that = 45 !!
which is why I'm reading this thread.

You won't get anything like 45mpg for a petrol in normal use. Most users will find that diesel mk3 Berlingo does about mid 40s mpg or a bit better in normal everyday use town & motorway.

Yep about 45-47 on mixed work. Motorway and urban mix. Have never seen 50mpg in the 9 months of having the junk.

The engine is only one part of several that improve after 'running in'.
All moving parts (such as wheel bearings, drive belts and so on) will move with less resistance after a given time.
The engine is most likely the component with the least amount of resistance change.

Our average mpg is 53.

Full loaded on holiday runs it goes down to 45mpg. (5 people, full boot, roof box and 5 bikes)

Our old Mk2 petrol Berlingo used to average 40mpg on long motorway trips, but our new Mk3 1.6HDi 75 has done 500 miles on one full tank, just local trips. Have yet to make a long journey to work out it's motorway mpg.

Count yourselves lucky. I'm only getting 37mpg on my 1.6 automatic, book says it should be 55. Done 13000 miles so it's well run in.
