I have looked for a thread on this as I thought it was mentioned.Am I right in believing that later cars cannot have their battery charged without disconnecting?I have one of the chargers that are supposed to prevent sulphation etc.If they can't be charged connected, does anyone know why? Thanks fellow members. PS,it's a 65 plate & I usually charge my battery monthly.

the battery is being charged by the alternator when the car is running, so no different to using a charger.
so as polar says.

Thanks for your replies gents.I read somewhere about the disconnection but could see no reason for it.I've always charged my batteries connected, once a month. Thanks again.

I charge my 2011 without disconnecting using the stud on the inner wing. This is with a ctek smart charger.
All my handbooks say to disconnect, but all my chargers say don't bother. I'm guessing it's the manufacturer covering themselves. They don't know what you might connect. I presume it's too high a charge voltage that would do damage?

I to use a CTEK charger. I used to go through the process of disconecting charging reconecting etc. Pain in the butt.
Now, after checking with CTEK, they GUARANTEE it will not damage any vehicles whislt charging.
Like jamesg I also charge it using the Battery Pos and Charging stud on the inner wing. I think thisstud is meant for jump starting so it's ideal for trickle/smart charger. The only thing I do is make sure the van is locked and shut down fully before I charge it. I try not to open the doors etc whilst charging but I doubt it makes any difference.
I've been using now for over 2 years and charge my Bingo van, a Pug 307, A modern Nissan and my modern motorbike. Non of them have had any problems at all.
CTEK are a bit pricey but I've read good reveiws on Noco Genius Smart chargers which a more realistically priced.
Just do it and you'll never go back :-)

Curious as to why you charge it. Do you not use the car much?

Hi Col. It's a habit from when I had my workshop 4 miles from home,so I charged it monthly.
My present use,now retired,is some shortish trips & the odd 100+m trip.It can stand for 2 weeks sometimes so I reckon charging it is a preventative measure.Call me overcautious but I've never replaced a battery. Ps.I use a smart charger.
