1.4 petrol hesitating

Hi All,
As you can see I'm new here, I have owned my 2002 Belingo 1.4 petrol from new, it has about 130,000 miles on the clock and has never missed a beat until recently. About a month ago, I had a problem when the car would start to hesitate whilst driving and not respond to any accelerator pressure, and would only tick over and drive on a very steady accelerator, with the slightest to much pressure on the accelerator making the engine slow down ' but it would always tick over' no lights came on the dash, and if I turned the engine off, it would restart easily, this continued for about 10 miles, then it cleared and the car drove as normal. So I fitted a new fuel filter, thinking that maybe the car was experiencing some fuel starvation, after this the car drove as normal for about 3 weeks, then on Sunday I had exactly the same problem which also lasted for a bout 10 miles again before clearing and again the car is now running fine again.
So I was wondering if anyone here has experience the same type of problem, and if so did you find the fault.

I can only suggest you check all connectors are sound/clean.
It may also help to clean the MAF sensor.Have you ever used a good quality fuel system cleaner?

Today it was also suggested by someone else to clean the two sensors between air filter and engine, so I have had both of these out and cleaned then with some cleaner as they were both both very dirty with a oiley substance of them. The connections were all clean, but as this problem appears to be very intermittent I will not know for a while if I have fixed it or not.

As above,Barry.It's the connectors you don't check that give the trouble.Good luck.:thumbsup:

But I would had thought that if there was a electrical connection problem, it would give the ecu and fault and in turn put my engine management light on.

Intermittent faults don't always register.Do the simple checks first,it works out cheaper if you fix it easily.That's just my humble opinion.

when was the last time you replaced the plugs?
try some fuel system cleaner like millers - cant hurt as it could be an injector sticking

Two things good to check on PSA cars of this vintage.
First your battery terminals - they can go high resistance, low current on an intermittent basis. Second, if this car has the short accelerator cable to a throttle potentiometer in the engine bay - it may be wear to the potentiometer track.

The car is coming up for a major service including cam belt change, so I will be replacing the plugs then.

Battery terminals are good and clean, I have already checked these. My accelerator cable goes straight to the inlet manifold butterfly.

When it exists, the terminal faults are inside the crimp. It's a sneaky but too common fault.
