Berlingo 1.9d battery keeps going flat?
#1
Hi

My berlingo 1.9d 2004 battery keeps going flat, tried another battery and that went flat. The battery light come on when i 1st put the ignition on, but is not coming on when the car is running so i am assuming its not the alternator.
The car has been fine up until now. The only other thing that has been changed on the car recently is the alternator belt but i have checked this and it tight enough.
So now i,m looking for suggestions please

It's a case of checking circuits through.Disconnect battery overnight. If no drain I would suggest then the alt disconnect. If you have the tools & knowledge you could check if ign controlled circuits are off & lastly non ign circuits are not draining ie int lights etc. Good luck & come back if you need more help.My advice is general & someone may pop up & know of a specific Berlingo fault,That would simplify things. Wink PS after reading your post again,I suspect the alternator.

As ron said the first thing to check is the alternator just because the ign light goes out does not mean it's putting 14.4 volt out put a volt tester on the battery run the engine with the light's and heater on see what the alternator is putting out

Hi
I checked the battery and its 12.62, then i checked the battery with the engine running and that read 14.48, I then turned all lights on,blower, wipers and rear demist and the voltage was 13.28,  I then cranked the engine over and the battery went down to 10.80 while turning until it fired up and then it went back up to 14+ volts
So i'm starting to think something is draining the battery?

Do all those reading seem fine Ron?

Yes, those readings are fine. Looks like you have current drain while Berli is turned off. It is easy to check, you just need to disconnect the battery on either + or - side and measure the current while everything is switched off. Cheap digital instrument with 10 or 20 A measuring range will do. Be careful not to switch anything On while Ampermeter is connected, especialy don't try to start the car, otherwise you may destroy the instrument.

How exactly can measure the current? Im a noob at this  ha. As you can probably tell.
I currently have this multimeter http://www.screwfix.com/p/lap-mas830b-di...600v/75337

Not sure if im doing this correct.
I set  the multimeter on as seen in diagram  i then took the neg lead from battery with everything switched off in the car, i placed the red lead from meter to the neg lead that goes to the battery then placed the neg lead on multimeter to battery neg terminal and the meter read 0.00.

This is how i have the meter set?
