Berlingo IBS and ECU Units
#1
Thanks in advance - I bought the van, a 2003 1.9D (think it's a MK11 - large headlights) from my neighbour. He had bought it on line and was told it had a lighting fault. Problems start when starting from cold - engine fires up but sounds diesel knock for a few minutes. Then sounds sweet. Headlight flash works, sidelights work but no headlights when stalk is turned on. Then fuel gauge will fall to zero, handbrake warning light and charge light stop on. No rev counter, engine light comes and goes after about 10 mins when temp gauge goes up headlights start working.
Also wipers, rev counter work and charge light goes off. Drives ok for a bit then diesel knock comes back on and off with loss of power - like timing retarded.
I called auto electrician plug into scanner and he said it was showing permanent faults in ECU including cooling fan fault, EGR fault and other faults which he deleted.
He aslo said a wire from top of diesel pump my be a bypass wire for the immobiliser. Also there has been a press button fitted on dash I presume to bypass heater plug relay.
Now after auto elc. has gone I have a permanent diesel knock and loss of power, no temp gauge working which is now making van overheat as well as all other faults!!
I do like a challenge but it's obvious someone else has messed with this van and would be grateful for any advice. It is a shame cos van drives really nice when running ok!!

Thanks again for any info
Chaz

Don't quote me but to me you have a few faults that might not be related to each other.
Do the basics, check main earths - engine and chassis. Check the battery is charged up and no loose connections.
As the engine will run then fault check the condition of the engine speed sensor (No.7 in diagram) and connections, this is essential for the injection.
Change fuel filter.
Also check these earth points
MC42 - for speedo unit
MC56 - for com2000 unit
MC13 & MC11 - for Bsi and engine fuse box module.
MC20 - head lights.
Do you have a multimeter?

Hi again, thanks Rustcrat for diagram. Chased all earth points in large diagram, removed and cleaned themapart from EMO3L which I presume is wiper motor earth.
But small diagram in box E, I can't figure out where on the van that is! Any idea??
I have also found a second hand heater plug relay - thus trying to eliminate the extra wiring. But still showing no heater plugs light on dash.
Speed senser looks clean.
Once again thanks for your input

It's the driver's side cab floor; look on the right and you'll see the door jamb - transmission tunnel is on your left.
