Door Mirrors - Glass or Plastic?
#1
Just bought a replacement door mirror from fleabay, it arrived damaged although the glass itself was fine, but Hermes say it's not covered by compensation due to being made from or containing glass. Seller has refunded me, but am curious and more than a little annoyed with Hermes. The 'glass' looks like plastic to me, anyone know for sure?

Only you can know for sure, try scratching the edge with a knife to see what happens

Interesting idea, maybe a red hot paperclip or small nail will tell. It sounds more plastic than glass when you tap it with a fingernail.

I had new mirror inserts for my last Berlingo from eBay - convex plastic and self adhesive - they were beyond my expectations and I was delighted with them.

After reading this I thought I may have been wrong, but I have just tested my old glass (why did I keep that? ) with a red hot screw and it is glass. This is on the original factory fitted heated mirror glass.

Thanks Trevor, that's conclusive for the OE mirrors then. My ebay seller has told Hermes that it's plastic, or at least ABS plastic backed (which is correct). We'll see if they bother to challenge that.
