[Engine] Diesel Particulate Filter
#11
It's the DPF that causes the black smoke.
Burns it off after collection and chucks it out the back!
(In simple terms...)

There is an additive dispenser that adds something to help keep it clean. The dispenser needs to be refilled as normal maintenance every 80K or 100K km. Forget which. I also use a good diesel (Shell V-Power) and change oil regularly with Total Quartz Ineo ecs 5W-30 as recommended by PSA for motors with dpf.

Thanks for that info. Does not seem to be a big problem to anybody, because no one has come on saying it could be.

Dave.

Just to confuse things, a DPF is also referred to as a FAP (which is French for Filter Air Particle - I don't know what it is in French so excuse my ignorance). So you quite often see it referred to as a DPF/FAP or FAP/DPF.

My wife's Pug 307 1.6HDI has done over 100K miles and we've only every had FAP warning light twice - both were solved by a quick burn up and down the by pass. The key is high revs which produce the heat, and also distance. I'm not sure how far you travel before a regeneration is forced.

The additive is now referred to as INFINEUM F7995- it used to be called EOLYS or EOLYS 176. Some older DPFs may require a slightly different type called DPX 42. So always double check for the correct one. Check VIN number. This stuff is expensive and C£50.00 a Litre and also quite hazardous so be careful. It's added to your fuel automatically when you fill up. (microswitch on fuel door..)

Don't go to the stealers and let them do it. They charge an absolute fortune. I've heard of £350.00 being charged. As well as topping the additive, the DPF also needs to be cleaned when it eventually gets clogged by ash (the residue from the regeration (buring of the soot). PSA will tell you that you have to replace it but I know of lots of people cleaning them and it working for afterwards. There are a number of companies who provide a mobile DPF cleaning service. The stealers will offer you a refurbished DPF at a much reduced price compared to new.

I've got the pleasure of topping up the additive tank on my wife's car next week. After top up, Peugeot Planet or Citroen equivalent must be used to re-set the counters in the veh control board/ECU. Pug Planet can also be used to electronically force a regeneration. Also, the DPF does need cleaning as power has steadily dropped off. So that'll be another job when I can get my wife to take a day or two off work.

OF course all the above refers to my wife's Pug but I should imagine it's the same or similar for 1.6HDI Berlingos. I hope this gives a better idea of the situation. A quick search on internet will reveal all.

I am considering a 2007 1.6HDI, which apparently has dpf in the catalytic converter. Is this the type of dpf that might cause me problems with short trips? If it's just a warning light coming on that means ' you need a blast down the bypass for 20 mins.',that's not a problem. Or is it not as simple as that?

Does a 2007 1.6 HDi have a DPF? I was under the impression they didn't.

I asked the selling dealer and he did not know, he contacted Citroen who said it has, in the cat.

Thanks

Trust the Frogs to hide it.My handbook doesn't seem to mention whether it needs the urine topping up.

Thanks for that very involved reply. I do a lot of short trips in a rural area. First trip of the day is 7 minutes, temp guage only gets half way up. Might not get above 50mph for 3 weeks, might not get to 70 for months. The motoring press says petrol engines are better for this now, due to dpfs. However, I am a dieselhead, having been a van and truck driver for years. I just want to get a newer diesel Berlingo than I have, but avoid the possible dpf problems.

Thanks Martin,I looked at my Haynes book of lies not realizing it was the old one.The new one confirms it,so it now lives in the car full time.
