It can't hurt to put a thin smear on can it.

No I suppose not but I don't have any so wondered if it was necessary? I don't think it is but just wondered if anyone had not used sealant and had any problems. It comes with an o ring and the instructions are generic.

I had exactly the same question late last year, I called the pump manufacturers (INA) & was told that if I had an unused steel crush gasket that came with the pump, then no sealant was needed, but if no gasket then a small amount is fine. I had the gasket, but used a small smear as well as the gasket to be sure & all is fine.
The argument against sealant is that by using too much, some can come loose in the water flow & get caught around the impeller.
An o-ring is probably fine on it's own, but again a small smear of sealant probably won't hurt IMHO

Thanks. I think I will just go ahead and not use sealant as I don't have any. I;ve been waiting a week for the parts and didn't order and sealant as I thought I had some if needed. I don't really want to wait another week so will give it a go and report back as to what happened.

A thin smear of grease is OK.
