I've had this on two M59s now and on both it's been the long rod with a joint on both ends, cost about £12. Ok frenchie thanks a lot ,how do you determine lts the long rod ??
You could feel the play in the rod when you pull it. Also the old rod had plastic cups and the new ones were metal and much tighter.
So where does this bit go then ?

You could feel the play in the rod when you pull it. Also the old rod had plastic cups and the new ones were metal and much tighter. Thanks frenchie ,all the three rods feel pretty solid to me!! as i stated in first post ,when it's in first gear you can move the gear stick to and fro like its still in neutral !!so when this is happening all the play is on the main rod where it's connected to the ball joint !! so i take it thats where the problem is !! ?????

Or the "barnacle" thingy on top of the gearbox were all the rods connect to that had to be changed under warranty when I had a problem with change suddenly seizing solid.
