My understanding is that it'd be recorded as a Cat D on the insurance database only as it is still roadworthy, even with the damage.
Obviously, if I were to ever sell the car I'd inform the prospective purchaser of the replacement tailgate. I'm going to keep good photographic records of the work that takes place simply to give any future owner confidence in the vehicle.
At this stage I'll run it round as-is and replace the tailgate when a gold one becomes available.
