I picked mine up by cycling there then just throwing the bike in the back. It's not the neatest and tidiest solution though as it's not quite long enough to go straight in, but not short enough to wedge nicely diagonally.
I think a bit of 2x4 across the back with some front wheel roof rack mounts would be the neatest solution, front wheel off, wheel the back in and clamp the forks to hold it upright.
For local stuff I've got a boot rack, not everyones cup of tea but I get lazy over the winter and tended to leave bikes in the back.
Freezing ride, covered in frozen mud, defrost in the back of the car, repeat for 3 months untill there's a good layer of mulch in the boot! Boot rack means I can get home, aim the hose at it on the driveway and chuck them in the garage without having to clean the car!
