Clutch Noise
#1
Hello All

Currently in France with a clutch which produces a high pitch squeal when depressed (it's not the only one). It will sometime whistle as it travels along.

The Norauto garage (similar to Kwikfit) say a new clutch is required for 700 Euros (£600)

Anyone have any experience of this problem? Car drives fine part from the noise when changing gear.

Is the price reasonable?

Thanks

Hi, Sounds probably more like the clutch release bearing.
Is it more like a whine when traveling normally?

I agree with Rustcrat.Used gently,it should get you home where you have a choice of repairers in your area(not so far to go if it goes wrong).
Just keep off the clutch pedal as much as possible.
Good luck whichever you decide.

I agree with the others! my clutch release bearing made similar noises when on its way out. The plastic part of the bearing wears and melts, gets worse then falls apart. Ours went on for 3 days and when i stripped it there was really nothing left of the bearing! eek!

Thanks to all who replied. I got back home £580 lighter but the Bingo sounds a lot healthier.

It was the clutch release bearing true enough - the chap showed be the parts and it looked pretty mangled. I guess after 94K miles it is expected.

Cheers

Its the shaft which operates the release bearing which seizes at the lower end. This then holds the bearing against the clutch pressure plate so the bearing is running all the time and starts to overheat thus melting the plastic parts
Cool
