[Engine] Engine rattle 1.8l Diesel
#1
Driving along - 40 -50mph, suddenly a fairly loud "dieseley" rattle starts from the engine when under load. No overheating or smoke, but seemed a bit down on power. Carried on for about 7 miles, no change but the engine seemed to be vibrating more than usual. After stopping for 1/2 an hour, restarted the engine and it was back to normal, no sign of the rattle

Any ideas? I'm thinking fuel pump problem??

if you mean 1.9d my old one did and still does this with its new owner, I was told something about the pump timing, turning it off and back on resets a relay then its ok for 6 months again, if it does it again pull over and try restarting, what year is yours?, mine was 2001, the dw8b engine would only suffer from this as it has the later electronic pump timing

Well, here is why you should always use the search function Big Grin  Necro-thread arise!

Had this exact issue driving home last night; a 51 plate 1.9 diesel, 180,000 miles on it.
Around 3 hours into a 4 hr trip, started as a noise similar to driving over rough concrete road surface (to the point that I thought it initially was road noise) after some stop-start slow moving traffic, then on getting back up to speed, it progressed to a very 'agricultural' sounding engine rattle on throttle input at any speed, with it running smoothly on idle and at constant speeds.
No warning lights, temps all good, handling fine.

Got the tractor back home with it now sounding very rough indeed, had a look under the bonnet and again on jacks this morning, seeing nothing obvious.
Took it out for a 'spirited' drive to clear its pipes this morning; nothing...sound as a pound! Dropped it into my garage (who just done its timing belt 3 weeks ago) and it has come back with a clean bill of health.

I am running up and down to the North of England from deepest East Anglia weekly for the foreseeable future so will see if this arises again.

Drop it down a gear could be labouring the engine, also in the winter there less wax in the diesel, mine did it most winters but millers helped a lot with the engine knock
