1.6 HDI 90 clutch replacement, poss. single mass conversion

Hello folks. The clutch in my 1.6 HDI 90 showed a whiff of clutch slip today in the hot weather on the M25 while towing my track car up a slight incline in 5th at about 2000rpm.

What is a good make of clutch for these vans and do they have dual mass flywheels? If so, is it worth converting to a single mass flywheel? And while the box is off, is there anything else worth doing? I'll renew both driveshaft seals.

As far as I know the 90 has a standard flywheel.

I would imagine any of the named brands of clutch kit would be fine, take a look on ebay as you often find the best prices there.

Make sure to use a 3 part kit with the pressure plate, friction plate and the release bearing.

Excellent, thank you. That would be handy if the flywheel was a single mass type, as I can just bung in a new 3-piece kit as you say. I will look for Valeo, LUK, Sachs etc.

Look up the clutch for your model, use your VIN number if it works.

Also look in the crankshaft section where you will find the flywheel.

I had the same berlingo engine in my car and my clutch was a solid flywheel. As far as im aware all the berlingos are now supposed to be solid flywheels. I have a 100 blue 16 plate now and as far as im aware this is also solid according to the diagrams on Citroen’s computer.

Thanks for the help. After some digging and looking on the Service Box, I'm confident I've got a single-mass flywheel, so I've gone for a Borg and Beck clutch kit.

An update on this one as I changed the clutch in my van earlier on in the week. Not a great deal to point out as it's an "average" FWD nuts and bolts gearbox removal job. Usual deal of not letting the slave cylinder pop out and checking for clutch fluid leaks (don't apply if you've a cable-operated clutch of course!), don't drop the gearbox on your foot, fitting new driveshaft seals while the box is out etc.

I have a single-mass flywheel and used a Borg and Beck HK2074 clutch kit in the end, although I just saw a brand new old stock genuine PSA clutch on eBay last night for similar money...

One gotcha that is worthy of mention and caused a bit of head scratching was an awkward gearbox bolt passing from the engine side into the bellhousing, which was hidden behind the heat shields around the catalytic converter (no DPF on my van). This meant that the downpipe had to come off, a job that I really didn't want to do but turned out to be super-easy, especially as the flexi was already disconnected in order to remove the two awkward lower gearbox bolts.

There are also two stud-and-nut fixings holding the box onto the engine. I took them out when removing the box but screwed them back into the block to aid refitting the box and lining everything up, which was extremely helpful.

The clutch was the original and had seen some (ab)use. Hopefully the new one means no more clutch slip when towing and coming on boost.
