2006 Berlingo 1.9 DW8b LEXIA live data readings retarded/advanced (Please help)
#1
Information
Hi all,

I have owned numerous 1.9d dw8b vans and find them to be simple and bulletproof so this has me stumped

All previous vans engine temps ran 80 degrees with hardly any smoke on acceleration and 550 miles to a tank

This van is down on power,  acceleration and feels restricted compared to others and 480 miles to a tank

To clarify this is a Lucas pump with electronic advance

My initial thoughts were running slightly retarded hence smoke on acceleration unburnt fuel and runs slightly hotter along with engine note quieter than others.

I am a capable diy mechanic and have been using lexia (very easy to use) since owning this van but struggling to find live data to compare with mine

I have exhausted my searches on google, forums etc so asking for help on here

Story so far....

Van has no faults on any ecu’s bsi injection etc

Can starts perfectly and idles perfectly 950rpm while post heating(due to electrical load from glow plugs on for 3 mins after startup) then at 1000rpm until waxstat warms up and idles at 900rpm

I have tweaked maximum fuel screw just a few degrees (maybe 2 mm) which has resulted in a better top end speed but takes so long to get there

All filters changed Bosch

New glow pugs (genuine)

Removed intake cleaned

EGR cleaned but was like new , disconnected (Removed throttle swirl flap and egr in closed position no gasses are entering manifold)

New cat and exhaust

New battery

The van has only done 50,000 miles so is like new

Lexia session

All injection actuators functions are normal, advance solenoid buzz etc

The live readings I have posted in pics attached

The advance requested and retuned are the same while driving but was wondering what the correct data should be maybe higher readings and if somebody maybe was able to check on their van to cross reference at idle and at speed

What is Flow information as it says 0 mm3/c at idle?

If somebody with experience can run their trained eye over live data I would be Very grateful.

I know the van is off as a few weeks ago the engine sound changed, slight pump clatter I used to hear on my old vans which i knew the pump was in a more advanced state as the van flew and acceleration was great then it returned to this lethargic state

It is quiet compared to my other vans so that’s got me thinking it’s retarded

I Will check timing belt but that would not account for the change in advanced pump state I experienced a while ago and returned to sluggish. If timing was out it would be constant.

Is the pump hub adjustable by undoing the 3 bolts and rotating pulley as I don’t think I can rotate the pump itself with bolts holding it in like a distributor

Also if  I disconnect tdc or lift sensor the engine note changes to a clatter so I know they are good confirmed by Lexia

Its frustrating as I know how nippy these vans can be when you have them running great and are great on fuel.

Any help much appreciated

Regards

I am afraid to say my 1.9D is neither nippy or good on fuel, I am lucky to get 400 on a tank .Does the lexia show correct throttle position when you push the peddle ?

I get 400+ miles per tank out of my DW8 year 2007 reg but 2006 build Romahome camper. It is always loaded and IU drive it foot to the floor quite a lot. It travels on the flat on motorways comfortably at 70+ but loses it on hills. It is coming up to 105000 miles and the performance (but not the mpg) improved after we reached the magic 80000 miles. It uses no oil and I am well satisfied with the fuel consumption considering the load and drving style, it has the aerodynamics of a brick

Hi

Thanks for reply

Yes the throttle position increases when pushed but have learnt this this only provides info for the egr valve to open and has no reference to injection timing

I think these came from factory very retarded and fuelling turned down to pass euro emissions NOX hence why they use more fuel over xud engines with no electronic advance because they are not running in a optimal timing combustion range

Basically a balance of performance and emissions

I have looked at Lexia again and it says advance at idle is 12 degrees

As you Increase speed the advance also increases to a max of about 18.2 degrees

Could anybody confirm these figures on their Lexia

If I can establish what others figures are I can perhaps play about with advancing pump timing on hub along and max fuel screw to get it where it should of been from factory before all these emissions restrictions

550 miles per tank 50 ish mpg and very nippy low end. It must be possible as my previous 2005 1.9d did the above and I only sold it to get this lower mileage one

Adjusting the max fuel screw just slightly had me at 80 mph on a motorway (and that’s not downhill)!

I think that is about 41 MPG which is pretty good

Hi

60 litre fuel tank

550/560 miles I used to log consistently on old 1.9d van from full to low fuel light

A whopping 6 litre reserve tank on these as confirmed by Lexia and I have physically taken one off and measured the reserve to confirm

You can drive around another 65 miles after reserve light comes on!

So calculations 54 litres fuel /550 miles is around 48 mpg

Okay that makes sense. I suspect you are correct that the older engine is better. I think you can even run it on cooking oil

If I can work out a optimal pump timing advance and fuelling adjustment I can share my findings and hopefully others will find this info useful.

Faster low end / top end and more mpg

But without reference option avaliable in Lexia I am not able to establish if my live data is correct to start with.

In regards to max fuel screw the below pic shows

Top standard factory position

Below I rotated just a few degrees clockwise

Result is increased power and top end speed (80-85mph) but not much more and too much adjustment will create excess smoke!
