Air filter blocked ,tyre pressures to low , brakes not releasing properly, car heavily loaded ,large roof rack, driving like a racing driver , driving with foot on brake/accelerator at same time .
My 1.6 hdi 92 mk2 berlingo can do between 42 to 58 MPG , the norm is 44 to 48 driving fast

What do you consider " running heavy " and which diesel do you run heavy ?

Going up and down a mountain side [1000ft] up to 4 times a day and running back and forth to Bangor city, all slow, heavy work on engine I get 38 ish, but on a run on dual carriageway i get just over 50. with roof rack, bike rack[permanently fitted] bull bar, etc. It is nor sleek and wind resistant. Like my old T25 VW camper, a brick.....but this gives me 3x the mpg.

It's the 1.6 hdi van.

I average 38-40mpg

Trying to figure is it just my foot or the van

I'm not the most light-footed driver, but with mostly twisty A-roads and a few single track lakeland passes, we've averaged about 41mpg in 27000 miles. Varys between 38 and 45 depending on the split of lake district and straighter, flatter parts. So I'd say your isn't too bad.

my last five fill ups:

My van is the Mk 3 90bhp.
(converted using l to g x 4.55)
MPG
1. 45.90
2. 44.58
3. 42.10
4. 43.06
5. 37.19

1 is probably unrealistic as I did a lot of long runs with little or no load.
2-4 are more realistic for me with 3/4 full load (no roof rack) - mixed runs
5. Is the same as 2-4 but with probably more shorter runs and of course it was particularly cold so probably a quite a bit of warming up.

I'm not particularly heavy right footed, probably a bit light but I do occasionally have a blast to work the engine hard and keep it running well.
I get my speed kicks on 2 wheels and I definately don't get very good mpg but it's funSmile

Incidentally, it's just been announced on the new Office of Fair Trading to investigate UK fuel prices? Diesel has just hit a new high 143.05 Sad
