heavy breathing
#1
im new on here and at it already. yesterday i collected my 2004 berlingo 2.0hdi desire. it started easerly from cold and i drove it home 50 miles doing mainly 70mph (motorway).and i must say i was very impresed by how well it went. this morning the weather was very icey and i thought it would be a good test for it starting, no probs of she whent. WELL the problem is today i was under the bonnet giving the fluids a check over. the first thing i noticed was the dipstick was sticking out and lots of oil had been blown out of the filler cap.obviously bad backpressure. i then shut the bonnet!! SOO could this be being caused by blocked breather hoses (althou the 2 i saw looked a bit large to get blocked) if i was rings surly it wouldnt start and pull like it does? the car had one owner ...and full service history and 105000 miles. any of your thoughts would be good.

Big breather hoses do get blocked, make sure they are clear & that the oil is fresh & up to spec.
Check the recirculating valve is clean & working(if it's got one)

ok ron thanks for that. ive just looked at a pic of a motor for sale on the bay and there is a large hose going down from the centre of the rocker (cam) cover and a smaller one on the right of the rocker cover, just there the cover is a weird shape do you know if there is a gauze or mayby a valve of some sort built in the cover itself. thanks

Before you dig too deeply..one simple thing to check.

Is the plastic engine cover secure? There are four twist to remove caps, which go onto four posts, these posts are bonded onto steel threaded ends which screw into the engine. (This sounds much more complicated than it is !!!!).

If any of these are missing or come apart, the cover can vibrate and pull the dipstick out of it's seating. Check first - it's a common problem with the HDi, many like me do away with the over - it's only a poor attempt at sound reduction - others have made up their own fixings.

hi coco the plastic cover was just resting on the engine as all the post were broke off. its that it had blown most of the oil out of the filler cap that got me worried.

THIS^^^^ when I first got mine I was baffled by the dipstick hanging out, thought it was too high an oil pressure, nope, flipping cover was loose knocking it out!

whent underbonnet to day to have a proper look . removed the plastic engine cover which was just laying there, started motor and removed the filler cap nothing much in the way of back pressure same on dipstick . replaced the dipstick and looked at the filler cap no rubber seal so after a rumage in the shed i found just the job fitted it replaced the cap and of for a good run. after getting home no oil leaking and dipstick was still in place. im now a very happy man. id like to thank you chaps for your help!! just the sliding door catch to do now .
