Glowplug/relay issues
#21
I only changed the glowplugs after the trouble started, will check the fuel filter housing though.

Mine the same. Checked yesterday morning and only get 10 volts to the glow plugs??? Would this cause the issue?

A 2+ voltage drop will almost certainly be caused by a poor earth or a poor connection on the +ve side.
Heaters use a fair bit of current and a poor connection anywhere will lower the voltage. HTH

Resistance between glowplug and battery -ve was 0.78 ohms, so would probably point to poor connection on the +ve side then.

Operated them this morning with a jump lead direct from the battery for 4 seconds and started on the 2nd turn of the starter.

Any ideas wheres best to start checking?

Is the glowplug relay in the box that is next to the battery, 2 relays and 2 40 amp fuses here, or the smaller black box bolted to the inner wing down behind the passenger headlight?

Hi, it should be the smaller black box bolted to the inner wing down behind the passenger headlight, label'd "Cartier". Might have the yellow chevrons on it aswell.
If you want the wiring diagrams, PM me your Vin and I'll dig em out.
Cheers.
Rummaging around I've found this check procedure for the Mk1 Hdi's.
Hope it helps. Confusedalut:

have you wired them direct to battery first thing in mourning hold on for 4 secs then crank engine if it starts easy you now there a problem with the glowplug circuit somewhere , if it does not start easier then you could have faulty glowplugs so go through them and check each one with multimeter.

Hi, i have been having trouble over the past two years with my berlingo 55 plate 1.9D and i have heard the glow plug test of directly connecting the battery to the glow plugs, or some bar that links all the plugs. I've looked and can't seem to find it, either that or i'm too stupid to see it. Could you help as i have a sense that it is the wires/relay. It's had new battery, glow plugs, alternator, starter motor and fuel filter fitted but the problem still persists. I'm wanting to sort it before the bad weather comes as it can take endless turns of the ignition to get it going. At least if i could do the test from battery to glow plugs then at least i'd know a bit more, thanks :-)

The glowplugs are linked by a wire which attaches to the plastic air intake manifold on the top of the engine. If you remove the engine cover there is a bolt on the nearside of the manifold with two wires connected. One goes to the glowplug relay, the other links the plugs in the engine block.

You can run a jump lead to the glowplug link wire from here.

On the 1.9d it's advised to wait for 5 or 6 seconds after the glowplug light goes out before cranking.

Good luck!

Hi, i have just tried this and couldn't get the plastic cover off, i did however manage to wrap a wire around the glow plug/wire nearest the battery and to the positive of the battery but when tried to start it was just as sluggish. There is also a noise like a clicking from a part that says Lucas on it for about 5 or so seconds before starting. I'm really getting lost as to what it could be now. The battery, alternator and glow plugs were tested last friday and all were perfect. Any suggestions????
