M59 15 inch alloys / steel wheel refurb
#1
My wheel trims are looking tired, thought I'd go with bare steelies but they are rusty. Looked into getting them refurbished but two of the people I spoke to didn't want to touch them.

New OEM steels aren't too pricey, but they are black and I want that silver/aluminium look (car is silver).

Then I noticed on catcar that there are some 15 inch alloys around, part nos 5402H0 and 5402H1

Does anyone have these? Do they fit ok on the car? I can't find much info out there about having them on Berlingos, they are always listed as Picasso wheels.

The steel wheels on my M59 are also pretty rusty, especially the spare one. I am thinking of refurbishing them myself, but that would be quite a bit of effort and I am currently postponing it.

As for alloys, I bought these: https://www.wheelbasealloys.com/alloy-wh...er/15-inch
They are 6.5j width and fit nearly perfectly on the M59, but the offset is slightly on the tight side, i.e. they are very slightly inside the wheel arches, but there is no need for spacers. I have them with winter tyres (Continental 185/65/15) on and have not had a problem with the alloys and I have had them for ~2 years now.

Thanks for that, the site looks good too. I've tended to avoid after-market alloys but my snobbery was misplaced, some of these could work I think.

refurbing wheels is an absolute pain in the but. I have started many sets, and always given up in the end. hardest part is getting the rust and paint off. If you have plenty of spare cash, get them blasted. or get some new ones.

Yeah I think I'd have no choice but to blast them, I don't have anywhere to work on them at the moment.

The wheel place I went to didn't want to blast them because they were too rusty!

Ideally I'd get them blasted then zinc-dipped, but I think it's looking like less effort (and money) to find a set of alloys and get them refurbed.

I like steelies but it seems crazy to spend more on them than alloys!

I suspect the zinc dipping will be quite expensive as compared to just coating them with primer and then painting. With the zincing they will probably outlast the car by a long margin, so it could pontentially be skipped. That's how I am thinking of doing it.

If you have an air compressor, you can probably make some sort of DIY sandblaster, several youtube videos show how to do it. It will not be as professional, but probably ok.

Blasting a really rusty set will just leave craters all over them. Refurbing alloys is just as much ball ache.
Dont worry about justifying the cost, if you like steels over alloys just pay the money and be happy. If you settle you sill never be truly happy with what you fit.
Im currently on steels, cost of them so far,
Wheels = £80 (got lucky on fb marketplace, brand new set of four 15" steels)
Banding of two wheels = £140 (inc return postage).
Primer and paint = £30
Tyres & valves = £130
So thats £380, and im still not happy with the colour, and i want the two fronts banded now. So more money, but theybwill be whatvi want at the end of it.

Found a shabby set on Facebook Marketplace, never thought to look there before but there is loads of stuff.

The car is a bit tatty so they fit quite well I think. You do wonder just how they managed to curb them so many times...

For anyone looking in the future, this is definitely an OEM set that was sold with the Berlingo and the Picasso, so searching for both can help. The codes listed in my OP are correct I think. I found these ones listed as Picasso wheels.

Not too much bother fitting them, but I had to find some alloy wheel bolts since the steel ones were no good.

It's also worth noting that the alloys are centre-less. This means your wheel shop will need an adapter to fit them onto the wheel balancing machine. It's not usually a big deal but it added an extra 30 mins to the tyre change time for me.
