The 643 ft is the height of the mast, not the climb to get to the base of it

Well I did live in Plymouth in my teens in the days of two channel TV in glorious monochrome ! and Plymouth Airport was grass landing airfield !

Lovely picture. I remember the launches but not the Sunderlands.
The RAF pulled out some years ago and Mount Batten is now all marinas and boatyards. The breakwater is a nice spot to watch the waterborne activity and popular with anglers.
