spare tyre trauma

Excellent idea. Was always clean, easy to check condition and pressure.
Never caught on, not sure why, Volvo innovation usually does.
Heat/fumes degrading the rubber (and the potential liability claims following a tyre failure) I expect.
Shame.
Could aways bolt it to the top of the bonnet landrover style.
The C1 spare is directly under the rear passenger seat-excruciating:S
It is on my to do list.
But not right at the top

Was at the back out of the way of heat sources.
And no fumes under my bonnet; be worried if there were!

There are some fumes under my passenger seat at times Confusedcratch:
But we do work well together out of the van

My mum had a 340 many moons ago. I didn't think that having the spare tyre under the bonnet was all that clever to be honest. It made the weight distribution worse (especially as it was RWD) plus the heat can't have been good for the rubber. Just a thought Confusedcratch:

If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.

Weight distribution?
We are talking Volvo 340; not McLaren F1 Team!
Handled like a boat anyway...
Don't think 15kg spare wheel would make any difference wherever you put it.

I use my own cross-type wheel brace which I can spin-it takes seconds to drop the carrier.
Is the hook and hanger similar? I was thinking this may be a easy replacement part for the rest of us...

I've done the same as j90xxx and carry the spare in the back.
Confusedalut:
I thought it didn't look like a standard thread - from memory it looks a bit 'quicker' than standard (though I'm not about to take it out to have another look). Standard pitch for M12 coarse thread is 1.75mm, but your idea of getting a nut welded on the top sounds an easier option than sourcing a twin-start bolt. I'm not sure I could sell the idea of keeping the spare in the load area to my other half - though that might change if we have a puncture on a wet February night....
Regarding J90xxx's post regarding location of spare wheels, our Beetles had the spare under the bonnet, so nice and clean. You kept the tyre over-inflated and it pressurised the screen washers, though was clever enough to cut off before the spare got under inflated.
Plenty of Land Rover have bonnet mounted spares. Ever tried to lift one????
