EGR question
#31
(18-02-2014, 08:51 PM)teddyc1 Wrote:  Yeah, peering inside the manifold, the flap looked horizontal to me. So does that mean it's letting in just clean air, or is the flap supposed to be vertical? Horizontal looks to me like "the window's down" and air from the exhaust is passing into the manifold.

If already clean air only, that's great to know.

In any case, in the morning I will probably just block the vacuum connections with a little screw, or maybe heat-shrink tubing and put that question for rest.

And yes I will leave the electrical connection on there --thanks!

But maybe I've got to get that flap vertical, like a little wall.

The flap is in the horizontal position when breathing clean air.
In the vertical position exhaust gases are re-circulated into the manifold and the fresh air is closed off!

Hence the reason for disabling Smile

Heat shrink tubing would be a nice clean finish!

Thanks Adam! It's great to know my 2nd hand Lingo arrived with pre-blanked EGR, so breathing clean air for the past year or more!

Little dab o' heatshrink tubing - that should keep fleas and critters out...

No hassles with the MOT emissions test either (last week). They just made me change all my brake lines, steering boots, tires, etc., lol.

Good stuff.. the pipe from the rocker cover also throws a lot of crap back into the manifold!
I have improvised a catch can for this from a black plastic pot/ cable ties and a short hose section..

Yep good old mot!
Mine was wheel bearing/ brake lines/ handbrake cable n/s/ brake cylinder and headlight aim too low!!
I love heatshrink... it's awesome..

Hey Adam, tell us, where did you put your "catch can?" Is it at point A or B, which I've marked on this pic?

It's not on the egr exhaust pipe. Is on the crankshaft cover outlet that connects to the inlet manifold. The position is above the vacuum pump. Is a black u shaped pipe, with 2 silver clips

Would you post a pic of what you did Adam?

Will do, may be sometime though as away for work. Take off that pipe and clean it if its dirty, that's a good start

Ok Adam! whenever you get back to the car.

As to that pipe, I had it off the other day while doing the crankshaft cover seal, pipe looked fairly clean as did the manifold.

I'm wondering tho - does that tube serve a good purpose? Like, does the crankshaft cover region *need* to breathe for some reason? Does it benefit the crankshaft somehow to have that outlet into the manifold? What do you guys think?

Maybe it's just more of the same: dumping fumes into the air intake like the EGR does…

On this fuel thread, I found a post that recommends letting the crankcase breathe to atmosphere. Maybe that's what you meant, Adam. Here's the post:

Or maybe breathe the crankcase to the exhaust system somehow… does that happen automatically just by blocking that crankcase exit port?

You can let it breathe to fresh air but some crud comes out, so is worth containing somehow
