How reliable is the 1.6HDI?

A friend of mine has been looking at various Citroen models as a next car, including Mk 3 Berlingos and C4 Grand Piccaso. Most used examples of these that we've found have the 1.6 HDI engine.

From what I have read here and elsewhere it would seem that the 1.6HDI has had more than a few problems compared to the relatively bomb-proof 2.0HDI which my Mk2 Berlingo has. Is this a fair impression and would anyone say that the 1.6HDI is best avoided? There do seem to be a quite a few 1.6s with high mileages out there so they clearly can do it, but I can't help wondering how much money has been spent on them to get them there.

Any thoughts welcome.

As long as the oil and filter are changed regularly (I do mine every 9000 km - probably over kill but ...) and you use an oil that meets the B71 2290 spec. there shouldn't be any turbo problems. The 1.6 HDi is used in a lot of cars other than PSA models - Mini, Ford, Volvo, etc. and seems quite reliable as long as it is properly maintained. On a used motor a full service history would be mandatory.

Id get the 2 litre. The 1.6 has a burst of torque then nothing.

The twinscroll one is better but after having one ill never go below 2L diesel again

I disagree.I'm more than happy with the performance of my 1.6.
I like to give it a bit of welly & it's not disappointing.
Proven servicing is the key.I change my oil twice a year,using the best.

Mine is coming up to to four years old. I have had the suspension done, nothing else.

The 1.6hdi is a good strong engine and is fitted to many non citroen cars but regular oil changes and correct servicing are important.

The 2.0 ltr has not been available in Berlingos for over four years so if you want a diesel its has to be a 1.6.

I wouldn't say the 1.6HDI is underpowered or slugish at all, by no means it's fast but it moves the berlingo along well.

Have to agree, there are a few things about our Multispace that I am not over keen on but the performance is pretty good given its size. After all it ain't supposed to be a sports car. We drove down to the Pyrenees last week and got 48mpg fully loaded albeit without using autoroutes and it was plenty quick enough for overtakes etc.

Had an 04 2.0hdi and now own an 07 1.6hdi. Both very good cars. The 1.6hdi wins every time for me. Both 92hp but cheaper Road Tax for the 1.6hdi. :thumbsup:

I hope I'm not courting disaster by saying it, but after nearly 2 years with our 1.6hdi it hasn't missed a beat and we love it. We're the second owners, and it was dealer serviced from new, which I'd like to think means that all the important stuff has been meticulously attended to(!). The original dealer did our first service last September.
It's definitely no sluggard, and although I don't thrash it, it does nip along quite nicely when you ask it to. MPG is excellent, and insurance is low for an ol' git like me (thought I'd say it before someone else does...)

Depends how much of nothing you want......if pushed mine (1.6 HDi)
will cruise happily at 80+ and it's rumoured that I've taken it well over the ton, on a closed private road of course!
I went up to Scarborough and back from Kent a few Saturdays ago and gave free rein to the engine on the way up,
the fuel consumption was around 46mpg. Took it easy on the way back and got 61mpg. A 550 mile day!
The 1.6 has higher performance than the 2.0 HDi basically because although the power is similar it's much lighter
and also revs more freely. Just a more modern design.
The crucial factor which has been mentioned ad nauseum is that the servicing MUST be correctly carried out
and the correct oil MUST be used.
